If you found yourself carrying your scooter a lot, or you expect to carry it a lot, you will probably know how important it is to be light in weight. Most people, myself included, want the lightest electric scooter possible, without sacrificing other features and performance. That’s exactly what we will be looking at in this post.
We will go over the best lightweight electric scooters out there, and which one of them may be a good choice for you, given your own unique circumstances and needs.

Electric scooter weight vs portability
Weight and portability for electric scooters are related but different things. Weight is probably the most important factor that determines portability, but it’s not the only one. Other factors that affect portability are the scooter’s volume when folded, its folding capabilities (do the handlebars fold, can it be pulled while folded), whether the scooter has weird pointy things sticking out of it, is its center of gravity natural, does it provide an easy way to be carried, etc.
While light electric scooters will tend to be portable, that may not always be the case. Check out the post on portable electric scooters if you specifically need a portable model, it includes a simple but effective way of measuring portability as well.

Out of all the specs for electric scooters, weight is one that manufacturers almost always publish. Very few brands choose to not publish a scooter’s weight.
Best light electric scooters for every use-case
We have a good view of the landscape of lightweight electric scooters, so that we can make very educated decisions that fit our needs perfectly. These are the best lightweight scooters for every use case and scenario.
Lightest electric scooter in the world – Swagtron Swagger Pro
The lightest electric scooter for adults is the Swagtron Swagger Pro, weighing just 16 lbs / 7.25 kilograms.

The scooter’s frame is made out of carbon fiber. That makes it both tough and light.
In fact, it may be both tougher and lighter than commonly used materials, like the commonly used airspace-grade aluminum alloy.
It may sound like a paradox, but that is one of the beauties of modern advancements with carbon fiber technology.
The only downside is that its production is still not perfected and there may be a few flaws in the execution of the scooter. In fact, that’s sometimes an issue that plagues other scooters from the Swagtron brand as well.
The Swagtron brand is based in the USA. They have many other scooter models released, and while the Swagtron Swagger Pro is one of their first scooters, it still remains one of their most popular models as well. The title of being the brand behind the world’s lightest scooter for adults is a pretty great achievement.
As expected from a lightweight electric scooter, the Swagtron Swagger Pro will not be that beefed up with performance specs. However, it will still offer plenty for the regular commuter. In fact, compared against other scooters in its price range, it will offer a very decent set of specs.
Given how the scooter weighs only 16 lbs / 7.25 kg, and yet it can carry an adult of 250 lbs / 113 kg without a problem, I can only say that it sounds like a mini-miracle.
When unfolded, the scooter is 39 in / 100 cm long, 15.7 in / 30 cm wide, and 36.2 in / 92 cm tall.
Folding it reduces its height to only 16 in / 41 cm and width to 9 in / 23 cm, which means its folded dimensions will be 39 * 9 * 16 in / 100 * 23 * 41 cm.
That means its total volume when folded will be very small (24.8 gal / 94 l), roughly the same volume a medium household object has. As a result, it is one of the most compact and portable scooters ever made.
One of my favorite things about Swagtron Swagger Pro is its price. I am primarily a value shopper, and with price typically being between $250 and $300, I believe that this scooter is a bargain.
Getting the world’s lightest scooter for the price of a regular budget scooter sounds like a great deal to me.
If you want to get the world’s most lightweight, most portable electric scooter, that’s also quite tough and performs decently, for the best possible price, you should definitely take a look at this scooter.

Xiaomi M365 – best lightweight electric scooter overall (and best under $500)

With a weight of 26 lbs / 12 kg, the Xiaomi M365 is a pretty light scooter. Not as light as the other fly-weights on this list, but still pretty light.
The small weight of this scooter is probably one of the main reasons for its massive popularity. It is probably the most popular scooter of all time, used by millions worldwide, and heavily relied upon in the fleets of ride-sharing companies.
The Xiaomi M365 probably needs no reintroduction. An excellent budget choice, the most tried-and-tested scooter ever, for many it is literally the synonym for an electric scooter.
If you want a lightweight scooter that is a very safe choice, and very few things can go wrong at this point, then the Xiaomi M365 is your perfect choice (see my full review of the Xiaomi M365 if you want to read more). It’s usually priced around the $450 mark. That price also makes it the best electric scooter under $500.

Unagi Model One – best high-end lightweight electric scooter (and best under $1000)

We defined lightweight scooters as ones weighing below 12 kilograms. The Unagi Model One is right on the line, weighing 12 kilograms.
It has a top speed of 25 km/h, and a range of 25 kilometers on a single charge. Those stats are enabled by a double 900 Watt motor.
While not a great climber (can go only as steep as 6 degrees), the scooter can carry more than the typical 100 kilograms most other scooters here can carry. It has a maximum load of 125 kilograms.
The Unagi Model One is an iconic scooter without a doubt. One of the best scooters that don’t cost a fortune but are still of very high-quality. Of all the lightest scooters, it is arguably one of the highest quality.
It is one of the most portable electric scooters that became hugely popular. It has sold many units and it has been tested and proven through time. You can be sure you are getting a very solid scooter.
It comes at a price of $840. Out of all the lightest scooter prices, this is one of the higher ones, but it’s well justified as this is the best lightweight scooter under $1000.

Kaabo Air – best value lightweight electric scooter, best lightweight with suspension
Despite the name, this scooter is a bit heavier than air. But just a bit.
The Kaabo Air weighs only 11 kilograms.
For that weight, it is still able to pack a punch. With a motor of 350 Watts, it can pull loads of up to 100 kilograms. Its top speed is 30 km/h, and its range is 35 kilometers on a single charge. All of that for a very affordable price of $399.
As with all Kaabo models, you get a great climbing scooter, able to go as steep as 15 degrees.
This is one of the few lightweight electric scooters that will come with a suspension. That’s mostly because it has solid tires instead of pneumatic ones.
Lighter scooters can sometimes have bumpier rides, and the dual suspension of the Kaabo Air addresses that perfectly.
The great thing about the Kaabo Air is that its handlebar is also foldable. When completely folded, it becomes one of the scooters with the smallest space occupancy.
Kaabo is a very solid, trustworthy manufacturer that makes all sorts of scooters. With the Kaabo Air, they offer a spectacular lightweight performer, ready to tackle any challenge.
A perfect choice for a first scooter, or for a busy professional with a commute. Amazing value all-round, usually priced at around $399.

Kugoo Kirin S2 Mini – best budget lightweight electric scooter

Kugoo is one of the true budget brands in the electric scooter industry. Only a few of their offers cost over $1000.
They have a strong presence in the market of electric scooters for kids and younger riders. In effect, that makes them experts in producing lightweight scooters able to handle all kinds of punishment.
The Kugoo Kirin S2 Mini is the smaller version of the Kugoo Kirin S2.
Its weight is 8 kilograms. It is made out of aluminum alloy, ABS, and polycarbonate materials.
It is a very light, economical, practical scooter, with performances only suitable for last-mile transportation and smaller rides. That is reflected in its very affordable price of $249.
The scooter will be able to take you 15 kilometers on a single charge, with a maximum speed of 25 km/h. It can climb slopes of 12 degrees, and carry a maximum load of 100 kilograms.
The Kugoo Kirin S2 Mini is one of the few scooters that you will be able to take literally everywhere you go. You can also take it on an airplane with you.
This scooter is almost 1 meter long (99 cm to be precise), it has a width of 42 cm and a height of 90 cm.
When folded, the scooter’s height goes down to 24 cm, with folded dimensions of 99 cm * 42 cm * 24 cm. One of the easiest scooters to carry with you ever made.

Voyager Ion – cheapest lightweight electric scooter
The Voyager Ion is the cheapest electric scooter for adults at the moment. It only costs $189.
You shouldn’t be quick to rule it out because of its low price. This model is probably one of the pioneers in bringing the price of scooters down. There have been a few models here and there that have flirted with the $200 price tag, but no model has dared to cross it.
And that is a powerful idea. An electric scooter for adults, for less than $200. What’s not to love? My bet is that this will not be the last adult scooter under $200.
With a weight of just 20 lbs / 9 kg, this scooter doesn’t pack a big battery, so it will come with a limited range of around 6 miles / 10 km. It has a 250 Watt motor, which is pretty standard for scooters this small.
If you need a lightweight scooter and you can only spend less than $200 for it, take a look at the Voyager Ion (full review here).

EcoReco XS – best lightweight electric scooter for commuting and longest range
Electric scooters were always about a cleaner, greener environment. That has been true since the original Segway days. It’s even more true now, with battery technology getting better and better.
There is one brand that is trying to take that a step further. That’s EcoReco.
Their flagship product is the EcoReco XS model, which is also one of the lightest electric scooters ever made. It weighs only 8 kilograms.
It is made out of aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, combined with stainless steel for increased stability.
The EcoReco XS started as an IndieGoGo project. It quickly gathered more than half a million dollars needed for its development. Over 1200 early adopters backed the project.
The product is a darling of Silicon Valley. It has quickly gathered support in the tech hub, which has propelled its popularity to unseen levels. Beautiful design, great features, a very well rounded model.
With a range of 32 miles / 52 kilometers on a single charge, it is by far the lightweight electric scooter with the longest range. The combination of portability and great range makes it a perfect choice for commuters.
It can achieve a top speed of 32 km/h, and it has 21 kilometers of range on a single charge. All of that is powered by a single high-torque motor. It can carry a load of 100 kilograms, which is great for an 8 kg scooter.
The EcoReco XS can travel 800 kilometers for $1 worth of electricity. That makes it one of the most cost-efficient scooters out there.
While open, the scooter is 100 cm long, 40 cm wide and 92 tall.
Unfolded, its length becomes slightly bigger at 104 cm, but its width becomes only 15 cm and its height only 26 cm.
Those are great dimensions for carrying it around. The scooter has no weird parts sticking out that will get caught in things.
The price of the EcoReco XS is $499.

E-TWOW GT – fastest and best climbing lightweight electric scooter

Out of all the lightweight electric scooters, weighing less than 12 kilograms, the best performing one is E-TWOW GT. When it comes to pure speed, climbing angle, motor power, and torque, no lightweight can match it. The specs are simply impossible for a scooter that light.
It weighs 12 kilograms, and yet it has a range of 50 kilometers and a top speed of 40 km/h. It has a climbing angle of an unbelievable 25 degrees.
It is not entirely clear to me how E-TWOW has managed to achieve such a big range on such a small scooter. I’m sure glad they have done so.
The scooter can carry loads of up to 100 kg. It has a motor with a peak power of 700 Watts, and a 504 Watt-hour battery.
Not surprisingly, this impossibly good scooter will be one of the most expensive scooters in the lightweight category. It comes at a price of $1089.
You can find the E-TWOW GT at a great price at EWheels here.
Swagtron Swagger 5 Elite – best lightweight electric scooter for heavy adults
One of the world’s most popular brands is the manufacturer of several of the world’s lightest electric scooters. In fact, they have 8 models on this list.
Swagtron is one of the most recognized brands in the industry. The Swagger series is one of the best selling electric scooter series ever. Since a big focus of the brand are kids and teenagers, designing lightweight scooters comes naturally to them. Hence why they have other scooters on the list of lightest scooters.
The Swagtron Swagger 5 Elite weighs in at 26 lbs / 12 kg.
As with most other lightweight scooters, this scooter will be in the budget price category, costing only $349. For that price though, it is one of the best, most performant, and most time-tested scooters in the world. It can reach speeds of up to 18 mph / 30 km/h, and go 11 miles / 18 kilometers on a single charge.
What’s interesting about the Swagtron Swagger 5 Elite is that it has the biggest maximum carrying loads out of all the light scooters. It can pull 145 kilograms on its deck. When you remember that the scooter weighs so little, it’s almost unbelievable.
The battery energy storage capacity is 216 Watt-hours, and the motor has 250 Watts of power.
This scooter also boasts one of the best climbing angles in the lightweight category. It comes with a capacity to climb hills of up to 20 degrees. Users have tested and confirmed this multiple times.
All of this will make the Swagtron Swagger 5 Elite one of the most versatile lightweights in the world right now, and a great choice for heavier adults looking for a lightweight scooter.
FLJ i11 – best water-resistant lightweight electric scooter

The FLJ i11 is a true lightweight budget scooter. It weighs only 9.2 kilograms, while still being able to carry 100 kilograms of load on its deck.
For the price of $399, you will get a good performance, 20 km/h top speed, and 15 kilometers of range. The battery capacity of this scooter is low enough that you can take this scooter on an airplane.
When folded, the FLJ i11 is 97 cm long, 46 cm wide and 42 cm tall. While open, the height goes up to 113 cm. Those dimensions make it a very portable scooter.
Where the FLJ i11 stands out from the competition is its IP rating. With a protection standard against water damage of IP55, it is a level above every other lightweight.
If you need a lightweight scooter that’s also water-resistant, and almost-waterproof, check out the FLJ i11.

Joyor H1 – honorable mention

The second-lightest electric scooter in the world is the Joyor H1. It weighs only 7.35 kilograms.
Joyor is a very underrated brand, manufacturing very good scooters in the low to middle price ranges. They have a wide offering of scooters for all sorts of uses. The H1 model is a lightweight option.
Compared to SoFlow Air Carbon, it looks very similar. It is a better option for those who want to get a little more range, on the account of top speed.
For me at least, that is certainly a very valid and reasonable tradeoff.
The Joyor H1 is spectacular in that it only weighs 7 kilograms, yet is able to pull 100 kilograms of load.
As with any scooter this light, it will look small and handy, and it will be very portable.
When unfolded, the scooter is 87 cm long, 24 cm wide and 110 cm tall.
When folded, it becomes slightly longer with 90 cm of length, but its height gets down to 33 cm. That gives it a total volume not larger than one of a big sports bag.
It is the perfect option for taking it with you anywhere you go. It fits perfectly on the bus or on the train. Putting it into the trunk of your car will never be an issue, no matter which car you have.
Unfortunately, its battery capacity at 187 Watt-hours is just a little over the allowed limit for airplane travel. You will not be able to take this scooter on an airplane.
To be fair though, very few scooters for adults will fit those criteria.
Naturally, its range will not be the best in the world. At 25 kilometers on a single charge, however, it’s still better than a lot of lightweight scooters.
The Joyor H1 comes at the price of $508.

Razor EPrime – lightweight kid scooter that adults can ride

Razor is arguably the most popular electric scooter brand in the world.
Their primary focus is scooters for kids. Maybe because of that, they are true masters at making lightweight scooters.
While technically the age for the Razor EPrime is 14 and up, its weight limit is only 80 kilograms. That almost puts it in the category of scooters for kids.
That doesn’t mean that an adult under 80 kilograms (or maybe even more) shouldn’t ride one.
The Razor EPrime is easily one of their best pieces of work. It weighs only 10 kilograms, which makes it one of the lightest electric scooters in the world.
With a battery capacity of 115 Watt-hours, the Razor EPrime is one of the few scooters you can confidently on a plane without any issues.
There are many reasons for the popularity of Razor scooters. Probably the biggest one is their very affordable prices. The Razor EPrime is well within that category, having a great price. You can see my complete Razor EPrime review, or check this scooter out on Amazon.

Frequently asked questions about electric scooters
Since everyone wants their scooter to be as light as possible, the interest in these models is expectedly huge. Of course, that means a lot of questions arise. These are the answers to some of the most important ones.
How much do electric scooters weigh?
The typical weight for most popular models is 28.3 lbs / 12.8 kg on average. Averaged across all scooter models, scooters weigh 46.8 lbs / 21.3 kg, but this number is skewed a lot by the heaviest scooters though, which are not very common. Electric scooter weight can vary from 15 lbs / 17 kg all the way up to 155 lbs / 70 kg.
Are lighter electric scooters less stable?
Electric scooters that are lighter in weight will typically not be as stable as heavier scooters. Some light models will do a good job of keeping the scooter more stable than expected, but in the end, the heavier the scooter, the greater the stability.
Stability is usually directly proportional to mass. The more robust and massive an object is, the harder it is to rattle it, shake it, or move it.
But it’s not just weight that affects the stability of the ride. Tire size, suspension, and the overall quality of the build and the frame, all affect scooter stability.
Can I make my electric scooter lighter?
Reducing the weight of an electric scooter is possible, although highly infeasible and inadvisable. The biggest contributors to a scooter’s weight will be the motor, the battery, and other electronic components, which are best left alone, and trying to modify them for reducing the scooter’s weight is a very bad idea. The only low-hanging fruit may be the fenders, which can be replaced with lighter ones, and the result will likely not be worth the effort.
Are electric scooters easy to carry?
Most electric scooter models are not difficult to carry for a short period of time. They fold into a rectangular-resembling shape, and their center of gravity is usually close to the middle of the scooter. While their length is usually not a problem, scooters with large and unfoldable handlebars may be a problem for fitting in car trunks, elevator doors, and public transport.
Some models, however, are not even meant to be carried. They are usually not even foldable, and even lifting them from the ground will be very hard.
For some scooters, the biggest issue for carrying them might be that they don’t provide a convenient way to grab them and hold them. Luckily, a great, cheap solution exists for them in the form of a carry handle accessory. The carry handle can help you move the center of gravity of the scooter and make it a lot simpler to carry. You can find one for less than $10 on Banggood.
Is the Xiaomi M365 a lightweight scooter?
With a weight of 26 lbs / 12 kg, the Xiaomi M365 can be considered a lightweight scooter. It’s not a super-light scooter, as some other models weigh just 15-18 lbs / 7-8 kg, but considering the average weight of other scooters, we can still say it’s pretty light.
Is the Xiaomi M365 Pro a lightweight scooter?
The Xiaomi M365 Pro is not in the category of scooters with the lightest weights, although it’s far from a heavy scooter. It weighs 32 lbs / 14 kg, and that’s about how much the average commuter electric scooter weighs.
What are the advantages of a lightweight electric scooter?
Obviously, the biggest advantage that lightweight electric scooters will have over their heavier counterparts is their portability.
For most people, this will be the deciding factor. The same applies to people unable or unwilling to carry heavy loads for longer periods of time.
Other than portability, lightweight electric scooters will have another important advantage. That is their energy efficiency.
The lighter a scooter is, the less mass it has to drag around everywhere it goes. As a result, it means it uses its battery less.
That will also make sure these scooters last longer as well. The less often you charge a battery, the longer its lifespan will be. As a result, the scooter will probably have a longer lifespan too. I guess there’s a reason why all the centenarians in the world are light in weight.
What are the disadvantages of a lightweight electric scooter?
The only real disadvantage that comes from the lower mass is the possibly decreased stability of the ride.
Lighter scooters will have less mass to keep them grounded and centered. It is possible that they may shake and vibrate more than a heavier scooter would.
However, this is often a non-issue. Most of the time we ride electric scooters on urban roads, and avoiding potholes is a good idea for every kind of vehicle out there.
The other disadvantages of lightweight electric scooters will not be because of their small weight, but they will typically be present nonetheless.
Usually, lighter electric scooters have smaller batteries. That’s where the disadvantages really come from.
More often than not, lightweight electric scooters will not have the greatest range nor top speed.
This is the balance that we are after, should we go for portability or power?
Most of the time, this is where you will need to make your decision, based on your individual needs.
Carbon fiber vs aluminum electric scooters
Many of the lightest electric scooters in the world have frames made out of carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is a material with interesting properties. It is both harder and lighter than the standard building material of electric scooters, which is the industrial or aerospace-grade aluminum alloy. The disadvantage of carbon fiber is that it can be more fragile than aluminum, and that’s why it hasn’t replaced it as the default material yet.

Should I get a lightweight electric scooter?
For most people, the answer will be yes – the less your electric scooter weighs, the better.
This will be especially true if you need to carry around your scooter more than usual. Examples include if you need to change buses or metros, or if you need to climb up or down some stairs. This is especially so for buildings with no elevators.
However, even if you have an elevator, you will likely want a lighter scooter anyway. Carrying it in and out of it will be a problem otherwise.
If you need to go through areas with heavy pedestrian traffic, you will probably need to push your scooter around. That’s another scenario where having a lighter scooter will pay off.
The majority of people out there need a smart solution. For getting to and from work or school, a light scooter will be perfect for the job. Any one of the scooters described here is a great choice.
When should I get a heavier scooter?
There are plenty of scenarios where getting a lightweight electric scooter will not be a good choice for you.
Actually, the weight will not be the issue itself. If you need a more powerful scooter, you will need a scooter with a bigger battery. That will usually mean a heavy scooter. These reasons can include:
- speed
- greater range
- top of the line climbing abilities
Also, there are some other secondary reasons why people choose a heavy scooter.
Often, they provide a more stable ride with less shaking and vibrations.
Finally, heavier scooters will typically be able to carry heavier loads. That’s why heavier adults frequently choose heavier scooters.
